Developing literacy through the arts

I  have a real love of the arts and regularly uses it when working with schools to raise standards in their literacy. She has developed DIAL questioning skills (reading skills – deduction, inference, authorial intent and literacy) using art images that have proved very effective with developing pupil’s ability to discuss more complex ideas:

My husband, Mick Robertson is an artist, and over the years we have worked closely together to develop the use of art as a powerful teaching and learning tool. We have used images like the one below to help children think about characterisation. By asking the question –  Who owns this cabinet? pupils can draw on their inference skills and their imagination :
